CYTX has been issued US Patent No. 8,105,580, covering Methods of using Adipose-derived Stem and Regenerative cells

The ‘580 patent … covering methods of using adipose-derived stem and regenerative cells extracted by self-contained adipose tissue processing devices such as the Celution® System, to heal wounds, including non-healing diabetic wounds.

• The ‘580 patent has 33 claims, which include wound healing by i) fresh cells, which are uncultured; ii) cells combined with an additive or reagent; and iii) cells that have been combined with one or more angiogenic factors;
• This follows December’s 2011 issuance in the EU of a broader patent (EP1778833) that covers adipose-derived stem and regenerative cells also for the treatment of wounds, whereby the adipose may be processed by any method (i.e. device independent). This is commercially relevant today, as Celution® is approved inEurope for treating specific types of chronic wounds;
• CYTX also has wound-related patents in Japan and India giving <CYTX> patent protection for this indication in 4 of the largest global healthcare markets.

The Bottom Line: Chronic wounds represent a major burden on the healthcare system and there is a need for novel treatments, such as cell therapy.
