Nighthawk Energy soars as Jolly Ranch work-over provides ‘pleasing’ results

Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK) shares soared around 25 per cent in early deals this morning as it said it was pleased with early results from the Jolly Ranch work-over programme.

Gaining 0.83p each shares in the Colorado based oil firm were trading at 4p.

Two work-over rigs have been in operation at the Jolly Ranch property for the past month and eleven wells have been reworked.

Also Nighthawk says a significant amount of geo-science work has been completed and this has provided substantial new sub-surface information, which indicates new areas with production potential.

There is increased potential for multi-zone production without the need of hydraulic fracturing (fracking), Nighthawk said. Drilling plans are now being accelerated for new wells, with new locations being identified and permitting work starting.

"We are pleased with the early results from the Jolly Ranch work-over program and we expect production to increase through the second quarter as wells that were unavoidably off-line in first quarter due to the work-overs are brought back online,” said chairman Stephen Gutteridge.

“Whilst remedial work on equipment and infrastructure will take a little longer than expected, there are encouraging signs that our acreage gives access to a wider range of potential oil producing zones than expected.

“With increased activity and interest from the larger companies operating around us, we are pressing ahead rapidly with our existing program and accelerating our timetable for new drilling."

Nighthawk explains that the work-overs involve first down-hole work, to prepare near term production were possible, while also completing remedial work ‘topside’ to ensure that production is properly treated, controlled, stored and measured.

The down-hole work comprises well-bore cleaning, cementing, casing repair, re-perforations, and new perforations.

Nighthawk says the ‘topside’ work has proved to be more extensive than it has initially expected. It says pumps and engines need repairing and in some cases replacing. Meanwhile heater-treaters are in a generally poor condition and they are being cleaned or replaced if necessary.

New tanks are also being brought in and existing ones are being cleaned and tested.

Some of the lead times are now being extended because of the extra work, although it says this will be mitigated by the deployment of some existing equipment, which is in good condition, to the wells with greatest potential.

As the work over programme was underway total production for the first quarter dropped to just 3,036 barrels of oil. But Nighthawk says the second quarter will provide a better guide to the level and consistency of production from the existing wells following work-over.

Westhouse analyst Andrew Matharu says the work-over has so far provided a better than expected result.

“It is possible that the majority of these wells will be producible in the near-term. Importantly, the company notes that production will be achievable without the use of hydraulic fracturing thereby saving time and money,” he said in a note to clients.

The analyst today repeated a ‘strong buy’ recommendation, which targets 10.7p a share.

“As the company continues to provide evidence to investors that its work programme is leading to a de-risking of the Jolly Ranch Project, the market discount that is applied to the asset value will be narrowed,” he said in a note to clients.

Nighthawk said it has completed a significant amount of geo-science work. And this has provided substantial new sub-surface information. This work includes the acquisition of third-party data on nearby assets.

The company says it is very encouraged by the initial findings. It indicates that there are both shallower and deeper formations, in addition to the Cherokee and Atoka formations, that show significant potential for production.

It specifically refers to the Marmaton formation, which has a typical depth of 6,200 - 6,500 feet, which is a proven oil producer in nearby leases.

In his note Matharu also notes the findings of the geo-science work. “Despite the positive news with respect to the potential of the Marmaton formation, management still insist that the Jolly Ranch asset is a Cherokee shale oil play and new wells to be drilled in Q3 2012 will demonstrate this.”

Nighthawk Energy says Jolly Ranch work-over is well underway

Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK, OTCQX:NHEGY) today said its workover of the Jolly Ranch project is well underway as it gave investors a run down of its current operations.

It says it has now completed a number of operations on seven Jolly Ranch wells.

However, it says that following a period of very limited investment under the previous operator, more work is required before the wells can be re-completed.

As a result, Nighthawk increased this part of the work budget to US$600,000 from US$300,000. The additional cash will be spent to complete a significant sand-fill in wells, to repair casing and tubing and the re-balancing and repair of pump units. Additional investment will be made on ‘topside’ facilities.

"Taking on the operatorship of a project that had seen little investment over the past year was always going to be challenging, but I am delighted that the Nighthawk Denver team have moved quickly to sort out problems, accumulate additional data, and get to well recompletion earlier than expected,” said chairman Stephen Gutteridge.

“Operational success is the criteria by which we expect to be measured and we will now be updating regularly on our progress."

The Jolly Ranch work over programme comprises three stages – preparation, data gathering and recompletion.

Nighthawk says the data gathering process has been very successful.

Aside from collecting data from its own wells Nighthawk has also gathered data about the surrounding area. All the information will support independent analysis which will help inform future drilling decisions and assess the extent of the various shale oil plays across the Jolly Ranch acreage.

Recompletion work has been ongoing for around a week to bring three wells into production. One Jolly Ranch well is currently producing oil at a modest 30 barrels of oil a day. Going forward

Nighthawk is expecting a significant uplift in production.

The company also reports that the area surrounding Jolly Ranch is receiving increasing amounts of interest from other oil companies such as Conoco, South Western Energy and Ultra Energy.

Today’s operational update comes at the same time as the group’s financial results in which the firm reflects on a period of transition.

In the past few months Nighthawk has been transformed with an £18 million fund raising and a deal to acquire a majority stake and assume operatorship of Jolly Ranch.

Revenues totalled just US$420,000 in the six months ended December 31. Nighthawk says this reflects low production, as a result of underinvestment, prior to the company taking charge of the project.

Additionally it reported a US$12.6 million write down to the value of its initial 50 per cent stake in Jolly Ranch. This is informed by the price it paid to buy the additional stake in the project. And it said it had incurred a significant increase in administrative cost as a result of the deal.

Consequently Nighthawk reported a US$16 million operating loss for the six period.

Nighthawk’s current work-over programme is fully-funded and at the end of December it had US$1.48 million in cash and cash equivalents – the £18 million funding was completed in January.

"The interim results cover a period of significant transition for Nighthawk which concluded with the announcement of the acquisition of a further 25 per cent interest in, and the operatorship of, the Jolly Ranch project,” Gutteridge said.

“The results also reflect the lack of investment in Jolly Ranch throughout 2011, which affected production and also left much remedial and repair work for us to undertake in order to improve production from the current low levels and to meet our own and Colorado State standards and requirements.

“This work is now well underway as the first step in a fully funded work-over and drilling program planned for 2012, and our focus is now on delivering operational success, including increased production levels.

“We will be updating regularly on this program. We will also be monitoring the increasing levels of third party drilling and leasing activity taking place around our acreage, a trend that we regard as extremely positive for our own project."

Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK, OTCQX:NHEGY) is launching a fully funded US$7.5 million program to substantially increase production from its Jolly Ranch shale oil project in Colorado, comprising a work-over of 15 wells and drilling of 5 new ones.

The work-over is estimated to cost US$750,000 and will take place over most of the second quarter of 2012. Nighthawk is currently contracting two work-over rigs which are expected on location in March. They will work on 15 existing wells.

For the second half, it plans to start drilling five new wells to add production and further establish the range and extent of the Cherokee shale, with at least one well testing the Niobrara shales in the northern acreage.

The first well is expected to spud early in the second half. The current estimate for the drilling program is US$6.75 million.

In order to improve its understanding of the Cherokee shale, Nighthawk also plans to undertake more logging work and re-interpretation of seismic data. Additional seismic and geological basin studies are expected to be undertaken at a later stage.

The company has also noted the increased level of third party leasing and drilling activity immediately adjacent to Jolly Ranch and anticipates that additional valuable information will become available from these activities, it said.

During 2012 Nighthawk plans to invest an average of over US$600,000 gross per month in increasing the flow rate and sustainability of production from Jolly Ranch.

This is the highest level of monthly investment since January 2011 and compares with an average gross investment of under US$100,000 per month over the past 12 months, a period during which both partners were restricted by cash shortage.

The low level of investment in 2011 has had a marked impact on production levels, a trend which Nighthawk intends to reverse during 2012, it said.

Last month, Nighthawk completed the acquisition of a further 25 per cent of Jolly Ranch from Running Foxes Petroleum and took over operatorship of the project with a 75 per cent stake.

Gross oil production from Jolly Ranch in 2011 reached 24,494 barrels of oil, a daily average of 67 barrels. Average production in January 2012 up to 23rd of the month, when Nighthawk assumed operatorship, was approximately 50 barrels a day.

Chairman Stephen Gutteridge said: “We are now commencing the implementation of a completely new development plan for Jolly Ranch, with Nighthawk in control as operator.

“Investment in the project has been severely restricted over the past 12 months which has resulted in lower production levels and the need for remedial work on a number of wells. We will now change this with the commencement of a US$7.5 million gross work program this year, with existing wells being worked on and 5 new wells to be drilled in the second half of 2012.

“Whilst we will not be able to fully quantify the potential for increased production until we have some results from the work-overs, we are confident that we can deliver a significant uplift on current levels," the chairman added.

Nighthawk Energy’s corporate moves should revitalise investor interest, says broker

The recent shake-up at Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK OTCQX:NHEGY) should revitalise investor interest in the company, according to broker Westhouse.

In recent weeks Nighthawk has raised over £18 million and struck a deal to take control of the flagship Jolly Ranch shale project in Colorado.

It has agreed to buy an additional 25 per cent stake in the project, taking its stake up to 75 per cent.

At the same time, chief executive Tim Heeley is handing over the reins to the newly appointed management team, led by executive chairman Steve Gutteridge, before joining the operational and commercial team on the ground in Denver.

“These key elements of corporate activity should act as a “collective” catalyst to revitalise investor interest in the company and, crucially, enable Nighthawk to demonstrate its subsurface strategy and move forward to sustainable production,” said Andrew Matharu, head of oil & gas at Westhouse, said in a note to clients.

With Nighthawk now in control as the operator of Jolly Ranch, Matharu says the firm will be able to implement its own reservoir exploitation strategy, and deploy its own operations team.

“We believe that the acquisition of Jolly Ranch, and its associated operatorship, will enable management to implement a reservoir development strategy where they will be able to extract greater shareholder value from the asset than the previous operator.”

Westhouse says Nighthawk can improve the Jolly Ranch operation in a number of ways.

Specifically Matharu reckons improvements can be made in well design and completion techniques deployed, drilling operations and analysis. Furthermore he says that horizontal drilling and side-track wells are also now an option for Nighthawk.

“A significant work programme is planned by the company to commence in the second quarter of 2012, and will include the workovers of existing wells and the drilling of up to five new wells,” Matharu said.

He added: “Development of the full project will necessitate the drilling of a large number of wells.

“Nighthawk, as the new operator, will need to devise a development plan for the field, involving decisions on well design and well spacing.

“We understand that the company has also yet to decide its financial model for developing the acreage. This may involve the sale of part or all of the acreage to a larger company.”

Westhouse rates the stock as a ‘buy’ with a 10.7p price target, which is more than four times the current price of 2.6p.

Nighthawk Energy receives strong support for £2.75 million cash call

Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK, OTCQX:NHEGY) said this morning it has received strong support for a cash call that will bankroll ambitious plans in Colorado.

It has placed 155.7 million shares with institutions at 2.5 pence each raising almost £2.9 million gross, or £2.75 million net of expenses.

The stock was sold at a modest discount to last night’s 2.7 pence a share closing price, and the proceeds will be used to fund the company’s increased participation in the Jolly Ranch shale oil project.

Directors including chairman Steve Gutteridge and chief executive Tim Heeley participated in the cash call.

Gutteridge said: “The strong support we have received for the placing is a further vote of confidence in Nighthawk as a renewed company with substantial potential as a sizeable US shale oil player.

“Combined with the support of our two largest shareholders through the convertible loans, Nighthawk is now well-funded to press ahead in 2012 as operator, with a focused development and drilling program at Jolly Ranch."

The company announced last month it plans to acquire a further 25 per cent of Jolly Ranch from partner Running Foxes for US$12.5 million.

When complete, the deal will give Nighthawk a 75 per cent stake and operatorship of the project.

A total of £5.5 million (US$8.5 million) will be paid in cash, while Running Foxes will receive £2.6 million-worth (US$4 million) of shares.

In total Nighthawk is raising £18.15 million which will fund the acquisition as well as next year’s work programme.

This is being financed by the issue of debt and equity.

In the same announcement on December 28 it was also revealed that Running Foxes has entered exclusive discussions to sell its remaining 25 per cent stake in Jolly Ranch to a “third party”.

Nighthawk’s operatorship of the project will allow it to control the speed and method of development at Jolly Ranch going forward.

It says a number of lessons have been learnt from the progress to date “which will be applied in seeking to improve the performance of the asset from existing and new well bores”.

By controlling the development, the company said it will be able to deliver greater value to shareholders by focusing on a number of key “development factors”.

These include well design and drilling operations, logging and well completion design and the increased use of horizontal wells.

Once the deal is completed, Tim Heeley will step down as chief executive and as a director.

However he will work with the existing Denver team to “set up and manage the operational and commercial structure and execution required to deliver sustainable, profitable production from the Jolly Ranch Project”.

The terms of deal outlined today value Jolly Ranch at less than the valuation in last full-year accounts.

So it is likely the company will impair the value of the project when it publishes the interim results.

Shale Oil specialist Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK, OTCQX:NHEGY) reported a rise in second quarter production from its Jolly Ranch project in Colorado, but reminded investors that most wells are on test and are not permanently producing.

Production in the second quarter rose to 3,079 barrels of oil net to Nighthawk compared with 2,062 barrels net to Nighthawk in the first quarter.

In its first quarter production update, the company had already flagged that second quarter production was expected to be higher due to increased workover activity and improved operational efficiencies to maintain production from the long-term test wells, namely the Craig 4-4 and Craig 16-32.

Nighthawk said the production figures should not be used to calculate a barrels-of-oil-per-day figure as the wells, which are predominantly on test, are intermittently taken offline for routine maintenance, modifications to pumping equipment, weather related conditions, workovers, recompletions or completion in new zones.

As the number of wells increases, the effect of individual wells being taken offline will have less impact on the overall production figures.

The previously announced completion and recompletion work continues. Work to further optimise costs and ensure reliable production is ongoing. Water and electricity lines have been laid to the Jolly 2-1, 16-1 and 10-5 wells.

The Jolly Ranch 2-1 well has been added to the current programme and was completed in the Cherokee A formation in late May 2011. The well was recently placed on pump and early volumes have indicated that the casing is likely to have a leak, which is inhibiting production. This will be remedied before being placed back on pump.

John Craig 7-2 was re-entered in late May 2011 to inspect the Cherokee A which had been previously fracced. Following analysis the fracture was shown not to have penetrated the Cherokee A and attempts were made to acidise the formation to see if production could be stimulated.

Whilst the horizon produced some oil it was not consistent enough to place on pump. However, the Fort Scott, which sits above the Cherokee A, was subsequently tested without any stimulation and produced sufficient oil for the well to be placed on pump to monitor the results.

Given the potential of the Cherokee A in this area; the 7-2 well sits approximately three miles to the North West of the Wiepking Fullerton Aloha Mula #1 which has produced over 220,000 barrels from a vertical Cherokee A well in the past two years, further drilling will be considered in this area.

In late June 2011, the Craig 15-34 well was tested in the Cherokee A and had oil shows during swabbing. The well was placed on pump in early July 2011.

Craig 7-34 is currently being acidised in the Cherokee A.

Further activities intended to enhance production from the following wells are now planned and being undertaken, Nighthawk added.

Edison noted that Nighthawk’s share price has continued to trend down during 2011 and is now, unjustifiably, trading close to its all-time low.

“The apparent market scepticism concerning the viability of the Jolly Ranch shale oil project ignores the significant progress made in de-risking the potential alluded to in recent Schlumberger and Gaffney Cline studies, and the intense interest in US shale oil plays,” said the boutique research house.

“Major development work is still required at Jolly Ranch but the project could ultimately evolve as a highly significant petroleum source in the US mid-continent.”

A Gaffney Cline study earlier this year revealed “a predictably modest” reserve position for Jolly Ranch of 24,000 and 55,000 barrels on a 1P and 2P basis respectively, according to Edison. “However, the estimates were based on a decline analysis for only two wells targeting two intervals in the Cherokee formation,” the research firm pointed out.

“Pro-rating the estimated ultimate recovery of 64,000 barrels for the Craig 16-32 well across the Jolly Ranch acreage would yield 2P reserves of a highly-significant 656 million barrels gross.”

Nighthawk is planning a new Jolly Ranch drilling programme and Edison believes that timing will depend on rig availability and completion of the workover programme. “Prior indications suggested four wells targeting the Atoka/Cherokee shales and three, the shallower Niobrara,” it said.

Edison is upbeat regarding Nighthawk’s valuation. While pointing out that the company’s recent share price performance reflects “either great scepticism concerning the viability of the Jolly Ranch project or alternatively an unwillingness to endure a long development period with an inevitably uncertain conclusion” it believes a conservative assumption that only 25 per cent of the Jolly Ranch acreage proves viable for development, a revised valuation of the company would be “US$650 million net or 107 pence per share”.

Shares in Nighthawk were down 1.8 per cent at 5.05 pence each at lunchtime today.

Wilson, who joins next month, is the second major appointment as chief executive Tim Heeley looks to strengthen the board.

Former City banker Richard Swindells joined Nighthawk last month as finance director.

Wilson brings with him almost 30 years of drilling and completions experience, which will be vital as Nighthawk carries out its completions and recompletions programme on the Jolly Ranch project in Colorado.

His last post was vice president of operations and engineering at Gasco Energy, and before that he has held roles at Maxus Energy and Forest Oil Corporation.

Chief executive Heeley said: "We are delighted that Chuck has joined Nighthawk at an exciting juncture in our redevelopment.

"Chuck brings extensive experience of operating in the Denver basin plus a proven track record in optimising production and driving cost savings in drilling and completion programs.

“His particular expertise of designing and implementing technical solutions for completion operations will be of real benefit as the company focuses on becoming more engaged in the operational aspects of developing the Jolly Ranch shale project."

Directors of Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK, OTC:NHEGY) have increased their stake in the business, buying 312,384 shares priced between 6.23 and 6.4 pence each.

Chief executive Tim Healey, who has been in charge since September 2010, has bought just over 150,000 shares and he now owns 330,000 shares. Richard Swindells, who was hired as the group’s new chief financial officer earlier this month, also bought just over 150,000 shares. These shares represent Swindell's total holdings.

Heeley recently described Nighthawk, which is now firmly focused on developing the Jolly Ranch shale oil play in Colorado, as a ‘work in progress’. It is currently undertaking a work-over and re-completion programme which hopes will give a much greater understanding of the project that has lots of potential, but this potential has yet to materialise.

Speaking with Proactive Investors earlier this month Heeley emphasised the firm’s new approach. His back-to-basics approach is designed to put the business on an exceptionally sound footing in the next year, Heeley said. “In many ways this process is something akin to creating a new company,” he added.

“We are trying to do something complicated in the oil the world – something more complicated than a conventional oil field. And nobody should doubt this. But we are going in the right direction.”

Nighthawk is one of the markets most talked about stocks, as far as private investors are concerned, and this chatter doesn’t always put the stock in the best light. Its critics point to low production numbers for wells completed to date and the project’s small resource.

However it is important to point out that Nighthawk’s jolly ranch is not a run-of-the-mill oil project.

While on the face of it the 2P reserves figure of 27,500 barrels of oil looks pitifully small, there are two things to remember. First, the results were produced from 200 acres of the project’s 410,000 acres. And second, they were based on just two discrete intervals in the Cherokee formation.

“We said the numbers were going to be low and we said this from day one,” Heeley said. “We’ve got to get more wells on the Cherokee, but we’ve also got to crack the Atoka (formation).

“We know there is oil in the Atoka. We have produced it, just not in sufficient volumes to get the reserves so we need to focus on this horizon too. This is where the effort is with completions and recompletions.”

A recent report from City broker Westhouse puts the Jolly Ranch data into context. Analyst Peter Bassett says the reserve numbers are likely to “grow significantly” as more wells and more horizons are included in the study.

“If the 2P reserve numbers were applied pro rata to the 410,000 acres, there would be around 56 million barrels net to the company,” Bassett said. “Based on the 3P reserve numbers, the reserves for the whole acreage would be around 131 million barrels net.”

On the 11 May Heeley said: Things don’t turn around overnight. Form where we are today I think it will be 12 months before the company is on an exceptionally solid footing.

“After that I think there are another two years left in the project, if not a little more.”

Tim Heeley will be presenting at the Proactive Investors One-to-One forum at the Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel in London tonight – click here for more details.

Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK,OTCQX:NHEGY), this morning unveiled a fall in quarterly production as it continued to concentrate on its completion and recompletion programme.

In its latest investor update it said the number of wells now on test production has risen to 12 from five and it expects its output will increase markedly in the three months to June.

Production from the Jolly Ranch shale oil project in Colorado was 2,062 barrels of oil in the period to the end of March with 3,086 in the three months before that.

Nighthawk’s drilling programme, meanwhile, has been delayed by “tight rig availability”, it was revealed this morning.

The target was to drill up to seven new wells with four on the core Craig Ranch field targeting the Pennsylvanian Atoka and Cherokee shales.

Then in the second quarter there would be up to another three in the Middle Mist area, testing the 'J' sands and the Cretaceous-aged Niobrara shale formation.

Boss Tim Heeley and his team still have plenty to keep them occupied with and expanded completion roster. And the initial six well programme has been expanded.

A number of other wells are now connected to the water disposal wells and further well sites are being electrified, enabling more efficient pumping and water disposal, the firm said.

In an interview with Proactive Investors last week Heeley said it would take another year to place Nighthawk on an “exceptionally sound footing”.

Key to this is the completion and recompletion work currently being carried out.

“In many ways this process is something akin to creating a new company,” Heeley said.

“We are trying to do something complicated in the oil the world – something more complicated than a conventional oil field. And nobody should doubt this. But we are going in the right direction.”

Part of this drive to create a ‘new Nighthawk’ is the recruitment of senior management with either City experience or operational expertise.

The group is on the hunt for chief operating officer, while earlier this week it appointed a finance director.

Richard Swindells joins from Ambrian Partners, where he was Nighthawk’s broker and nominated advisor.

It means he has very good understanding of the company, the challenges it faces and also the opportunities to develop the Jolly Ranch project.

The new FD also comes with an impressive track record for raising funds, having helped find £275 million for Ambrian clients.

The appointment does appear to have piqued the interest of investors in the past couple of days.

However it is difficult to say whether this is a turning point for the stock which took a knock in after the publication of long-anticipated Gaffney, Cline Associates reserves report last month.

On the face of it the 2P reserves figure of 27,500 barrels of oil looks pitifully small.

However there are two things to remember.
The Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK) share price suggests a company in extreme distress. Yet nothing could be further from the truth, according to boss Tim Heeley.

Nighthawk, he says, is work in progress as completions and recompletions are carried out on the Jolly Ranch shale oil play in Colorado.

And this is part of a back-to-basics approach designed to place the business on an “exceptionally sound footing in the next year”, Heeley told Proactive Investors.

“In many ways this process is something akin to creating a new company,” he added.

“We are trying to do something complicated in the oil the world – something more complicated than a conventional oil field. And nobody should doubt this. But we are going in the right direction.”

“This is where the effort is with completions and recompletions.”

A recent report from City broker Westhouse puts the Gaffney, Cline data into context.

Analyst Peter Bassett says the reserve numbers are likely to “grow significantly” as more wells and more horizons are included in the study.

“If the 2P reserve numbers were applied pro rata to the 410,000 acres, there would be around 56 million barrels net to the company,” Bassett said.

“Based on the 3P reserve numbers, the reserves for the whole acreage would be around 131 million barrels net.

“We stress that these are not reserve forecasts and that actual reserve numbers will need to be certified.”

It may take another 12 months before the GCA work is updated to give a more meaningful figure.

However Heeley says we can expect a production and operations announcement in the “next few weeks”, and periodic updates thereafter.

In the meantime, the stock continues to drift. In the year to date it is down over 40 per cent and it briefly went below 5 pence.

However in recent days the trajectory has been upwards as buyers have entered the fray.

“The price continues to be under-strength,” Heeley said. “But what’s heartening is the institutional demand is there, and it shows we are doing the right thing.”

Investors buying in at this level possibly sniff a bargain too.

Taking a very pessimistic valuation based on the company’s land holding, rather than its potential to produce oil, then Nighthawk is worth 10 pence a share at US$300 an acre, analysts point out.

Westhouse, meanwhile, reckons the shares are worth 34 pence each based on an estimated net asset value for Jolly Ranch of 100 pence.

In spite of the technical challenges and the depressed share price, Heeley remains guardedly optimistic about the future.

“Things don’t turn around overnight,” he concedes. “Form where we are today I think it will be 12 months before the company is on an exceptionally solid footing.

“After that I think there are another two years left in the project, if not a little more.”

It points out the 2P figure is assigned to just two wells, while the 3P figure is limited to five wells, or just 200 acres of the project’s 410,000 acres.

Also the reserves statement is based on the oil recovered from just two intervals in the Cherokee formation.

Chief executive Tim Heeley said: “Although as expected these initial reserve numbers are low this merely reflects the fact we are in the early days of developing the Jolly Ranch shale project.

"The GCA report underlines the potential value and highlights the additional work required in order to determine the optimal commercial completion and stimulation techniques for the project's Cherokee and Atoka shale acreage.

"Drilling by other companies in the area, plus continued leasing activity, helps reinforce our strategy and we will continue to execute our work programme in a logical fashion to achieve our strategic goals."

In comments following the company’s first half results statement, Matrix Capital, Daniel Stewart & Co and Westhouse Securities, reiterated target prices with a strong upside, and the latter two reiterated their ‘buy’ stances.

The company announced this morning that for the remainder of 2011, it plans to increase production levels and establish reserves and resources for the first time at its Jolly Ranch shale oil project in Colorado.

The results for the first half to end-December 2010 showed the loss on disposal and impairments related to the exit from the Revere and Cisco Springs projects in order to focus on Jolly Ranch. The revenue from continuing operations rose to US$1.3 from US$1 million.

It expects a maiden reserves and contingent resources study for Jolly Ranch by Houston-based Gaffney, Cline and Associates to be concluded and the results to be announced in the near term.

In its ‘Daily Oil & Gas Filter, Westhouse said today’s statement contained no surprises, and its target price of 37p already reflects the effect of the non-cash charges. Nighthawk currently trades at around 8.6 pence.

The broker expects the resources study, the ongoing workover programme and new wells that are planned to be drilled this year to act as important catalysts for the share price going forward.

Daniel Stewart & Co said in its ‘Morning Notes’ report: “We like the fact that the company is focusing on its core project Jolly Ranch Project. We are also encouraged by the updates on the wells and their potential to start contributing to production.”

Nighthawk’s revenue run rate is slightly ahead of the broker’s estimates for the half year, and it believes that the progress made with the wells being re-completed may lead to production volumes exceeding its estimates.

DS&C reiterated its ’buy’recommendation with a 45 pence price target.

Matrix Capital said Nighthawk has gone through significant strategic and organizational changes in the past six months and is now in a much stronger position to realise the value of its core asset, Jolly Ranch.

“Jolly Ranch has the potential to transform Nighthawk, but more work is required to prove the concept,” it said in its ‘Daily Update’.

In January Schlumberger Data and Consulting Services completed the Eclipse reservoir simulation on Jolly Ranch.

The long-awaited update suggested oil in place in the Cherokee and Atoka shale formations is some 14 times higher than previous estimates. The information was passed on to Houston-based Gaffney, Cline and Associates, which began a reserves and contingent resources study.

In total Schlumberger reckons there are 35,157 barrels of oil per acre compared with a previous estimate of 5,879 barrels.

Nighthawk making progress in quest to unlock the value of Jolly Ranch

Nighthawk Energy (LON:HAWK, OTCQX:NHEGY) continues to make steady progress in its bid to unlock the potential of the company’s Jolly Ranch shale oil project in Colorado.

It said three completions and re-completions have taken place since January on wells Craig 8-1, Williams 10-27 and Craig 4-33.

Craig 8-1 has been acidised, but not fracture stimulated. It targeted new perforations in the Lower Atoka and existing perforations in the Cherokee. It is producing in the range of 10 to 30 barrels a day.

Williams, meanwhile, was acidised and then fracced in the Lower Atoka at the end of last month. This means it is currently flowing back fluid, though the first few hundred barrels of this fluid contained around 50 per cent oil.

Finally, Craig 4-33 was acidised in zones in the Cherokee and Upper and Lower Atoka. It is currently producing between 20 and 30 barrels of oil a day gross.

“These initial results from the first three wells are encouraging and show that recompleted wells are capable of higher levels of production and that further progress is being made in unlocking value at Jolly Ranch,” the company said in a statement.

“In particular, it shows that the key to demonstrating this value is by continuing to refine the completion and fraccing methodology.

“As such, the focus of the current work programme remains to show that production from the current wells can be improved, while planned future drilling will add to the overall knowledge base and production portfolio.”

The next phase of drilling is expected to take place in two months once a drill rig is available.

The programme will comprise four development wells in the core area around the Craig Ranch field - all focusing on the Pennsylvanian Atoka and Cherokee shales.

Up to a further three wells will be drilled in the Middle Mist area, to test the 'J' sands and the Cretaceous-aged Niobrara shale formation, based on the results of 3D seismic.

These formations are currently the targets of numerous wells by other operators in the northern part of the Denver Basin, another US shale oil play, the company said.

The "J" sands and Niobrara formations lie at shallower target depths of around 5,000 feet, which should result in a considerably lower total cost than the deeper Cherokee and Atoka wells at Jolly Ranch.

Each Niobrara well is currently estimated to cost around US$400,000. The deeper wells are anticipated to cost around US$1.5 million, excluding any fraccing and acidisation.

Nighthawk’s Craig 16-32 well, meanwhile, has produced 11,700 barrels of oil since mid-June with minimal water. A change of pump has raised daily production from 34 to 40 barrels a day to 90 barrels with the rate maintained at 85 barrels a day.

Nighthawk chief executive Tim Heeley said: "We are pleased that we continue to see signs that the potential of the Jolly Ranch project is being unlocked.

“Increased production, like that from the recompleted wells, is always good news and activity on surrounding acreage continues to give us confidence in the project.

“The key strategic objective remains to continue to refine the applicability and the repeatability of the completion operations.

"Further drilling will not only enhance our knowledge of the play but will also provide a larger well portfolio from which to produce."
