Medicago completes first part of phase II human trial for H5N1 Avian flu vaccine
Biotech company Medicago (TSX: MDG) said Wednesday it has completed the first part of its phase II trial for the company's H5N1 Avian flu vaccine.
The company said it expects to present its interim phase II trial results early in the new year.
The placebo-controlled study is designed to test the safety and immunogenicity of different doses of the vaccine in approximately 255 healthy adults, between the ages of 18 to 60 years.
Medicago develops vaccines based on Virus-Like Particle (VLP) and plant-based manufacturing technologies. The company's methods have the potential to deliver a vaccine for testing in about a month's time, avoiding the quick spread of a pandemic.
In the first part of the phase II study, 135 healthy adults were administered twice with either a placebo, or the H5N1 vaccine, at varying doses to determine the optimal amount. The second part of the trial will be conducted in 2011.
Medicago said that to date, all results have shown the H5N1 vaccine is safe and well tolerated.
The company was up 4.4% at $0.47 as of 12:24pm EST on Wednesday.
