Some 15.2mln people clicked-in to watch the NFL’s first ever live streamed broadcast game via Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO).
The game, the International series fixture between Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, held at Wembley, London, registered a total of 33.6mln views across all devices – with the number of unique views totalling 15.2mln.
Yahoo described it as “a truly historic event” as it was the first time that users could access the NFL's premium content globally, without cable, authentication or TV.
A third of all views came from international viewers, i.e. those outside the United States.
Views came from as many as 185 different countries, Yahoo added, and the total viewing time amounted to 460 million minutes.
Adam Cahan, Yahoo senior vice president, in a statement said: "It's been a great opportunity to partner with the NFL and deliver a truly exceptional global live streaming experience for our users.”
"We're seeing a dramatic shift in the industry as audiences' primary video watching moves away from TV.”
The NFL, in the words of senior vice president Hans Schroeder, was “thrilled” with the viewing stats for the game.
As the game was played in London in the afternoon, the broadcast was at 9:30am for viewers in Buffalo and Jacksonville.
"We are incredibly excited by the fact that we took a game that would have been viewed by a relatively limited television audience in the United States and by distributing it digitally were able to attract a global audience of over 15 million viewers," Schroeder said.
