A potentially fatal security issue with some of its Ram trucks has prompted car giant Fiat Chrysler to recall more than 1.25mln of the popular pickups.
Fiat Chrysler said on Friday that the software bug could cause certain airbags and seatbelts to fail in crashes where the vehicle rolls over.
The fault with the cars’ internal computers could potentially disable the side air bag and seat belt locking mechanism when a vehicle rolls over in a crash.
“The company is aware of one fatality, two injuries and two accidents that may be related,” said Fiat Chrysler in a statement.
The recall – which is set to begin next month – includes about 1mln in the US and 200,000 or so in Canada, and covers certain models made between 2013 and 2016.
Fiat said Ram owners would know if they’re possibly vulnerable if a warning light appears on the dashboard.
To reset the system, owners should turn the vehicle off and then back on. If the light is gone, the vehicle is working correctly, the company added.
