Customers will be able to watch the process on the August Home app, and will receive confirmation that the door has been locked behind the deliveryman

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (LON:WMT) is testing a service in Silicon Valley that will deliver groceries straight into customers' fridges.

The test, in partnership with August Home - a provider of smart locks and smart home accessories – will see Walmart customers place their orders online, and a third-party driver from Deliv will bring the items to a shopper's home, using a one-time passcode that's been pre-authorised by the shopper to allow entry.

The driver will put grocery items in the kitchen, and even the refrigerator, with customers able to watch the process on the August Home app, and will receive confirmation that the door has been locked behind them.

Walmart is testing the service with a small group of August Home customers.

The company said in a statement that this move is "a natural evolution of what Walmart is all about -- an obsession in saving our customers not just money but also time."

It comes as the retail market is getting a big shake-up following Amazon.com Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMZN) launch of Prime Pantry and Amazon Fresh services and its takeover of Whole Foods Stores.
