Waste-to-Energy specialist PowerHouse Energy Group Plc (LON:PHE) has inked a new deal with Wrightbus Ltd, a company that build innovative hydrogen powered buses.

The memorandum of understanding is expected to lead to a definitive deal for a venture with Powerhouse supplying its Distributed Modular Gasification (DMG) system and Wrightbus supplying hydrogen fuel powered buses.

Together they would aim to provide a ‘first of its kind’ solution marketed to local authorities and public transport providers in the UK and internationally. The idea is that the low-cost and environmentally responsible hydrogen powered buses will be deployed in city centres.

“We’re delighted to announce this MOU with an alternative energy leader like Wrightbus - an innovator in clean public transport,” said Keith Allaun, chief executive at PowerHouse Energy.

“Together, we believe we have the potential to offer a cost-effective turnkey solution in which we will produce hydrogen using our DMG process to produce the road fuel for Wrightbus’s zero emission hydrogen buses.”

“This is the model by which we can begin to change the environment.”

Allaun added: “Together we offer a compelling proposition for transport providers such as a local authority in which they would be able to offer a zero emission bus service at the same cost as diesel transportation, with zero emissions, and converting waste into hydrogen and electricity.

“Given our shared corporate objectives to make a positive difference to our world profitably, PowerHouse and Wrightbus are an ideal match.”

Powerhouse’s DMG has the potential to enable hydrogen to be produced locally from small-scale plastic processing plants. It said the hydrogen can be produced at a cost that’s competitive with petrol and diesel.

Significantly, it highlighted that in the market to date production of hydrogen from natural gas has been prohibitive due to distribution costs, and at the same time the whole process produced considerable CO2 emissions.

The company believes its system can change those economics, with carbon neutral hydrogen.
