imaging systems and radiopharmaceutical technologies.
Positron agrees to produce strontium-82 with Arronax
Molecular imaging company Positron (OTCBB:POSC) said Friday that, through its soon-to-be subsidiary, Manhattan Isotope Technology (MIT), it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Accelerator for Research in Radiochemistry and Oncology at Nantes Atlantic (Arronax), to collaborate on the production of strontium-82.
Positron uses strontium-82, a synthetic radioisotope, in its positron emission tomography (PET) scanning machines, which help diagnose heart disease in about 400 patients each day.
MIT president, Jason Kitten said: "Working with the high caliber scientists at ARRONAX and their cutting-edge high power cyclotron is truly a tremendous growth opportunity for [strontium-82] supply.
"We fully expect that the collaboration of Arronax and MIT will expand the global supply of [strontium-82]; a supply that is very limited and in great demand by the medical community."
Located in Nantes, France, Arronax operates a 70 million electric volt (MeV) cyclotron, and associated support facilities. A cyclotron creates a strong magnetic field, which causes a charged particle to accelerate and re-enter high-voltages at high speeds. The machine has many applications, including the production of the synthetic radioisotope, strontium-82.
Positron said the Arronax facility is only one of a small number in the world with the requisite proton beam characteristics required for strontium-82 production.
Currently, the U.S. Department of Energy is the only American producer of the synthetic isotope.
Under the terms of the agreement, Positron and Arronax will also collaborate on the production of other high-energy radioisotopes that have medical applications, like geranium-68.
Earlier this month, Positron announced that it would acquire MIT, though it did not disclose the details of the transaction. The acquisition is expected to close in early 2012, and is subject to regulatory approvals.
Shares of the Texas-based Positron rose 3.16 percent on Friday, to $0.0163 as of 10:04 am ET.
