Medical retinal imaging technology company Optos PLC reported strong sales and profits rises for the full-year to the end of September 2008 and is looking ahead with confidence despite challenging economic times.
It made a pretax profit of US$5.9 million, up from US$1.6 million, on sales of US$100.8 million, a 16 percent rise from the US$86.8 million it posted a year earlier.
The period under review saw 14 percent growth in North America revenue, 61 percent in European revenue, and the number of devices installed worldwide rose 18 percent from the previous year to 3,983.
Optos' devices produce ultra wide-field, high resolution images of approximately 82 percent of the retina, something the company claims no other device is capable of doing in any one image. The images provide optometrists and ophthalmologists with enhanced clinical information which facilitates the early detection, management and treatment of disorders and diseases evidenced in the retina such as retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.
