Anturion (LON:ANTP), which is focused on the development of exhaust sensor to detect harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx), confirmed plans to begin sales before the end of 2012 in today's full year report.

Last year, Anturion had 1,000 prototypes manufactured by a third party for independent testing, which returned positive initial results. Post-period, further testing identified certain design changes and developments necessary to move towards the production of commercial prototypes.

These adjustments will enable it to market the sensor for evaluation by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers to the car industry as soon as in mid-2012.

The potentiometric sensor measures the level of smog and asthma-causing NOx in exhaust fumes, allowing the engine to adjust the mix to minimise the emissions.

This is important as the soon-to-be-introduced Euro 6 emission standards will force manufacturers to produce cleaner diesel cars.

According to founder Erik Ulsteen, the European market alone could be worth £500 million per year, representing a quarter of the potential global marketplace.

“The directors believe there is a highly attractive opportunity for the sensor, particularly given the stricter regulations coming into force in Europe,” said chairman Alex Borelli.

“The company has received a number of enquiries from the automotive market sector and, following the success of testing to date, we are nearing commercialisation of the sensor and anticipate that sales will commence later this year.”

The licences held by Anturion cover both gasoline and diesel engines, while the sensor currently being developed is targeted on the diesel engine market for which stricter regulations that place restrictions on NOx emission are coming into force in Europe in 2014.

On the financial front, the company posted a pre-tax loss of £1.38 million and a loss of 1.18 pence per share in 2011, reflecting continuing development costs.

Net assets stood at £1.76 million at the end of the period including cash balances of £0.8 million.
