Metals exports push Peruvian exports to $2.4 billion in January

Strong growth in copper exports helped Peru's regional exports grow 66.5% to US$1.9 billion year-on-year in January 2010, the Peruvian Exporters' Association said Sunday.

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru Saturday estimated all Peruvian exports totaled $2.4 billion.

Copper exports were the largest export goods of Peru's most important regions. Arequipa in southern Peru posted the highest export figures with a 207% increase to $250.5 million.

Arequipa's main exports were copper concentrates and refined copper (US$150 million), gold (US$45.7 million), lead (US$18.5 million) and fishmeal (US$10.1 million).

Ancash was the second largest exporting region with $248 million in goods shipped in January, mainly copper, zinc, gold and fishmeal.

Peru is the world's top producer of silver, second in zinc, third in copper and tin, fourth in lead, and sixth in gold. The U.S. State Department says mineral exports have consistently accounted for the most significant portion of Peru's export revenue, comprising 63% in 2008.

The United States was Peru's largest export market in January, absorbing $56.2 million, while the Netherlands was Peru's second largest importer with $27.8 million in exports.
