Seeing Machines shares soar on news of DSS order from BHP Billiton

17th Mar 2010, 10:20 am

Seeing Machines (AIM: SEE) landed its biggest contract to date for its DSS product suite in the mining sector, agreeing to supply it to BHP Billiton (LSE: BLT, ASX: BHP) subsidiaries BHP Navajo Coal Company and San Juan Coal Company, which are part of BHP’s Energy Coal business unit.

Shares in the company rallied 25% in early London deals on the announcement.

The contract covers the fit-out of the entire haul truck fleet, a number of ancillary vehicles and ongoing support services at the Navajo mine in New Mexico, with the installation expected to be completed next month.

Seeing Machines and BHP Billiton Energy Coal are also engaged in talks over further DSS deployments across other mines within the business unit.

The DSS is a system that directly monitors the driver of a vehicle for distraction and fatigue events and provides a series of interventions aimed at managing these events and averting potential disasters.

“We are very pleased to be working with BHP Billiton on such a significant contract for Seeing Machines. The operational conditions for drivers in the mining industry are very demanding and the DSS provides a proven technology option for mine site operators to use in their efforts to minimize both the direct costs of accidents and those knock-on effects of interrupted production. We believe this deal with BHP Billiton, and other recent announcements are indicative of the huge potential growth opportunities for our DSS business in the mining sector,” said Chief Executive of Seeing Machines Nick Cerneaz.

Daniel Stewart & Co (DS&C) said that the deal served as evidence that Seeing Machines’ profile is rising rapidly amongst major mining companies and that it warranted a review of the potential contribution to earnings and related valuation.
