Footsie is set to recoup most of yesterday's gains after a solid showing overnight from US markets.

Spread betting quotes indicate the top-share index will open 16 points higher at around 6,781.

Last night, US benchmarks made a little headway with the Dow Jones up 2 at 16,781, the S&P 500 up 2 at 1,938 and the NASDAQ Composite up 10 at 4,321.

Concerns over the situation in Iraq continued to dampen investor enthusiasm, and the situation in Asia was more mixed.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 is up 33 at 14,966 but in Hong Kong the Hang Seng index is off 98 points at 23,200.

In the UK, Costa Coffee owner Whitbread is set to report. Given that Whitbread (LON:WTB) shares dipped almost 2% at one point on Monday perhaps there was a degree of apprehension ahead of the hospitality group’s trading update.

Also updating today: Crest Nicholson, Software Radio Technology, Trifast, Ashtead Group, Daisy Group and JD Sports.
