AVI BioPharma Receives Patent For RNA-based Therapeutics
AVI BioPharma (NASDAQ: AVII), a developer of RNA-based therapeutics, announced today that it has been granted a U.S. patent covering the use of phosphorodiamidate morpholino based oligomers (PMOs) as antibiotics.
PMOs are synthetic molecules based on a fundamental redesign of the natural nucleic acid structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and RNA.
AVI’s PMO-based compounds differ from traditional antibiotics in that instead of targeting proteins, it targets microbial ribonucleic acids (RNAs) to inhibit protein expression at the gene level.
In in-vitro studies, AVI's PMO-based compounds have demonstrated bactericidal activity against both antibiotic susceptible and resistant bacteria, and to date have not shown cross-resistance to other classes of antibiotics, said the company.
Advanced generation PMO-based antisense chemistries have also been developed by AVI and are being applied to the discovery and development of new drug candidates.
AVI's advanced chemistries include the PPMO, PMOplus and PMO-X.
AVI’s share price went up by 3.32% to trade at $2.18 as of 1:10 pm ET on the Nasdaq on Wednesday.
AVI is a Washington-based biopharmaceutical company specializing in the discovery and development of RNA based drugs targeting a range of diseases including influenza, duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Ebola.
