Finisar Acquires Broadway Networks For Undisclosed Sum
Finisar (NASDAQ:FNSR), a provider of subsystems and components for fiber optics communications, announced today that it had acquired Broadway Networks for an undisclosed sum in an all-cash transaction.
Broadway Networks, founded in 2006, has developed a pluggable transceiver that incorporates Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) technology to enable networking devices such as switches and routers to connect directly to passive optical networks, a type of networking architecture that uses fiber optics instead of copper.
Broadway has also developed a "Smart SFP" with built-in remote management functionality that enables telecom carriers to monitor and diagnose the fiber links to reduce operating costs.
"Broadway's EPON Stick puts networking capability inside the pluggable transceiver," said Karen Liu, principal analyst of Ovum, an IT advisory company.
"Because it is based on a ubiquitous standards-based form factor, it immediately creates a new market. Combining with a market leader like Finisar, who can scale this technology going forward, is a great move for the whole industry."
Finisar plans to eventually extend Broadway's technology to the gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON) market. GPON is a competing networking technology to EPON.
The acquisition is not expected to have a significant impact on revenue or earnings in the near term, the company said.
Finisar’s share price rallied 3.4% to trade at $18.14 as of 3:08 pm ET.
