AT&T (NYSE:T) Monday said it set a sales record for the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5, with customers ordering more of them than any previous iPhone model on the first day of preorders and over the weekend.

The company said that the iPhone 5 is still available for preorders online and will be available at its stores starting on Friday. It didn’t say how many were sold.

Last week, Apple unveiled the much-lauded sixth-gen smartphone at a media event in San Francisco.

Apple's latest incarnation now features a larger screen and weighs just 112 grams, which is 20 per cent lighter than the iPhone 4S.

The device will come with a faster A6 processor, and includes high-speed 4G LTE (long term evolution) connectivity, and a widescreen aspect ratio.

It can download up to 100 megabytes per second, and switch antenna connections between different networks, while the display has 44 per cent more colour saturation.

Apple has opted to use aluminum and glass for the phone's body, and altered the dock connector.

The new eight pin dock connector, cut from the original 30 pin dock connector, may pose as a compatibility issue for existing Apple device owners.

Any changes to the dock connector means current Apple device users would need to shell-out cash for an adapter, or purchase new products.
