Agricultural giant Monsanto Co. (NYSE:MON) reported Wednesday second-quarter profits jumped 19 percent amid revenue growth driven by global gains in corn, and a strong selling season in the United States, prompting a lift in its full year profit forecast.

Grain handler Viterra (TSE:VT) has agreed to be acquired by Swiss-based Glencore International (LON:GLEN) in a $6.1-billion deal that will see two Canadian firms pick up major segments of Viterra's business.

Glencore (LON:GLEN) is one of several parties eyeing Viterra (TSE:VT), Canada's largest grain handler, as it seeks to boost its agricultural division, sources said Monday.

The Mosaic Co. (NYSE:MOS), a supplier of phosphate and potash-based crop nutrients, said second-quarter profits slid 39 percent, but saw revenue rise 13 percent driven by improved pricing. 

The company anticipates a planting rate of 2,000 hectares this year and 5,000 per year thereafter. With over 50,000 hectares of inventory, the company has enough land until 2021.
