Company Statement:
Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AVL: TSX) is a Canadian junior mineral exploration and development company with a primary focus on the rare metals and minerals that are in increasing demand for environmentally-beneficial high technology applications. These include lithium, tantalum, cesium, indium, gallium, rare earth elements (“REE”) such as neodymium, dysprosium and terbium and rare minerals such as calcium feldspar.
Avalon presently owns five rare metals and minerals projects in Canada, four of which are at an advanced stage of development. These are the Separation Rapids lithium minerals project, the Warren Township calcium feldspar project where bulk sampling programs are in progress, and the Thor Lake REE and the East Kemptville tin-indium-gallium-germanium projects, where large inferred resources have been identified requiring further drilling to bring the projects to the pre-feasibility stage. Current Operations:
Thor Lake Rare Metals Property
Avalon presently holds interests in 6 mineral properties all located in Canada. Avalon’s principal assets are its 100% owned Thor Lake, Separation Rapids, East Kemptville and Warren Township rare metals and minerals projects.
Avalon’s top priority is its Thor Lake rare metals project, located near Yellowknife NWT. Thor Lake is a world class resource of rare metals and minerals now being evaluated primarily for its potential to produce the rare earth elements (REE). Demand for REE is growing rapidly because of their critical application in high strength permanent magnets which are vital to hybrid car technology and many popular consumer electronics products, yet there is no virtually no production of REE outside of China.

Thor Lake is unusual in its enrichment in the more valuable “heavy” rare earths (HREE) such as europium, terbium and dysprosium along with neodymium. Avalon is currently focusing its efforts on defining high-grade, HREE-rich resources in the very large, Lake Zone deposit. The Lake Zone is also enriched in tantalum, niobium, zirconium, hafnium and gallium which all represent potential valuable by-products.
A $6.5 million work program was carried out in 2008, involving 14,129 metres of diamond drilling to delineate indicated and inferred resources, metallurgical and mineralogical studies to define a process flowsheet to recover the REE, community consultation and environmental studies. A minimum $2.5 million program is planned for 2009 involving additional drilling, market studies and metallurgical work with the overall objective of completing a pre-feasibility study later in the year. This would be followed by bulk sampling and a final feasibility study in 2010-12 with initial production possible by 2013. (Read More)
East Kemptville Rare Metals Project
At East Kemptville, located in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Avalon is evaluating the potential for re-developing a past producing tin mining operation as a new producer of tin plus the rare metals indium, gallium and germanium, and plans to generate a new 43-101 compliant resource estimate and preliminary economic assessment in 2009. Separation Rapids Lithium -Tantalum Project, Kenora, Ontario
The Separation Rapids property is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. Known as the “Big Whopper” Project (“BWP”), it is only the fourth example in the world of a rare metal pegmatite with the size required to be of major economic importance and only the second to be enriched in the rare lithium mineral called petalite. The deposit is a potential source of lithium minerals for use in the glass and ceramics industry and specialty composite materials and is also a potential source of lithium chemicals for the growing rechargeable battery market. There is also potential for production of tantalum and rubidium minerals and a pure form of sodium feldspar. (Read More)

Warren Township Calcium Feldspar Project
At Warren Township, located near Timmins, Ontario, Avalon is evaluating a large resource of high purity calcium feldspar which like lithium, offers potential cost-reducing efficiencies to glass manufacturers and environmental benefits through reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Furnace trials carried out on a bulk sample in 2007 by a major U.S. glass manufacturer produced positive results but the project has been put on hold due to permitting delays and reduced demand related to the economic recession.
