Biocompatibles is a leading medical technology company in the field of drug device combination products. The Company is divided into an Oncology Products Division and a Licensing Division.

The Oncology Products Division (68% of Group sales) supplies medical devices from facilities in Farnham, UK and Oxford, CT. These include Drug-Eluting Bead Products, which are used in more than 40 countries for the treatment of primary liver cancer (HCC), liver metastases from colorectal cancer, and other cancers; and Brachytherapy products (Radiation-Delivering Seeds) which are used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Our distribution partners include AngioDynamics Inc., Terumo Corporation and Eisai Co. Ltd. We have a clinical collaboration agreement with Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc.

A central conviction underpinning Biocompatibles’ Oncology strategy is that the core approaches to cancer treatment, namely systemic drug administration and surgery, can and will be supplemented by much wider use of minimally invasive local treatments for locally dominant disease.
The rationale behind locally delivered therapy is to achieve a better side-effect profile and potentially improved survival. Both the Drug-Eluting Beads and the Radiation Seeds products of our Oncology Products Division are in this category of treatments.

Our Licensing Division (32% of Group sales) has two components, CellMed and PC Licensing. CellMed, in Alzenau, Germany, is developing a Drug-Eluting Bead product for the treatment of stroke, based on proprietary stem cell technology; a GLP-1 analogue for the treatment of diabetes and obesity partnered with AstraZeneca; and a cosmetic Dermatology Bead partnered with Merz Pharmaceuticals GmbH. Whilst our PC Licensing agreement with Medtronic Inc. is in the field of Drug-Eluting Stents.

Our aim is to deliver products that are relatively easy for doctors to use; are safe for patients and have clear clinical benefits; and whose value is clear to the hospital administrator and to the ultimate payer.

We are pioneering the use of Drug-Eluting Beads for the treatment of cancer and are the de facto market leader. We also have promising programmes in Type II diabetes and stem cell derived therapies. Our task is to develop these leading technology positions into attractive market positions or, at the right time, transition them into valuable licence agreements.

We aim to generate cash from transactions with licensing partners – recognising the high cost of new equity from our shareholders – and we will pay dividends and return capital to shareholders to ensure that we use our balance sheet efficiently.

PRECISION Bead:
PRECISION Bead, a Drug Eluting Bead, is an embolisation system loaded with doxorubicin intended for the purpose of treating Hepatocellular Carcinoma. PRECISION Bead is a preformed, deformable microsphere that occludes the blood flow to the target tissue and can release a local, controlled and sustained dose of drug directly to the tumour. DC Bead®:
DC Bead® is an embolic Drug-Eluting Bead capable of loading and releasing in a controlled manner chemotherapeutic agents. DC Bead is used in trans-arterial chemoembolisation (TACE).  This is a minimally invasive (non-surgical) procedure performed by an interventional radiologist.  DC Bead are produced from a biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel that has been modified with sulphonate groups for the controlled loading and delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs.  DC Bead occludes the blood flow to the target tissue and delivers a local and sustained dose of drug direct to the tumour.
