Wolf of Wall Street and Inception actor Leonardo DiCaprio has added his influence to an environmental movement pledging to divest fossil fuel assets.
DiCaprio is among 2,000 individuals and 400 institutions, together representing some S$2.6bn of assets, intending to take money out of businesses based on fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
The actor called for a transition to a clean energy based economy.
“After looking into the growing movement to divest from fossil fuels and invest in climate solutions, I was convinced to make the pledge on behalf of myself and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation,” DiCaprio said.
“Now is the time to divest and invest to let our world leaders know that we, as individuals and institutions, are taking action to address climate change, and we expect them to do their part this December in Paris at the U.N. climate talks.”
A statement, on the gofossilfree.org website, said that the movement to divest from fossil fuels and invest in renewable energy and climate solutions had ‘exploded’ with 50-fold growth in the past year.
