Services provider AJ Lucas’ (ASX: AJL) associate company Cuadrilla Resources Holdings is drilling its fourth shale gas well in Lancashire, U.K.
The Anna’s Road well, which will have a 1,000 metre horizontal section, will give Cuadrilla a better understanding of the target shale and determine if gas trapped within can be viably recovered.
Cuadrilla is implementing an environmental/regulatory procedure which it believes should apply to the operation of such drilling and completion activities for unconventional hydrocarbons in the UK.
It has also submitted an application to the Environment Agency for a permit to safely dispose of its returned water.
AJ Lucas, which holds a 43% stake in Cuadrilla, noted that the measures taken by the British Government to encourage exploration for unconventional hydrocarbons were encouraging signs that it would allow fracture stimulation to resume.
The three earlier wells in Lancashire were all vertical wells.
