Recent incarnations of the popular smartphone have failed to make a splash

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to unveil its long-awaited iPhone 7  on Wednesday afternoon during the tech giant’s annual launch event in San Francisco.

Techies have heralded the new phone for a while now, jumping on any leaks.

The big one is the rumoured abandonment of the headphone jack, leaving only one port.

If this is true, it could force consumers to use Bluetooth headphones or buy those compatible with the smartphone’s charging port. Apple is however expected to include an adapter jack.

Camera quality is also expected to improve, with a two –lens shutter for some of the bigger models.

The dual-lens would mean improved picture quality by combining two images at different exposures.

In the age of Snapchat and Instagram and with more photographs taken with iPhones than any other device, the camera feature is what everyone is waiting for.

The new phone is coming at a critical time for the company.

Recent incarnations of the popular smartphone have failed to make much of a splash with consumers. Last year’s iPhone 6 resulted in a decline in sales of the device for the first time ever.

In July, Apple reported its second consecutive fall in profits as sales of the smartphone continued to decline. At the time it reported a 27% drop in quarterly profits as sales of the iPhone were lagging almost a decade after it was released.

Apple’s foray into wearable technology also hit a snag. Shipments of its Apple Watch device have plummeted 58% compared to last year. Not to mention Apple’s stellar tax bill from the European Union.

The iPhone 7 could well be the lifeblood Apple needs to resurrect sales and the timing couldn’t be better.

Rival Samsung was forced to recall its Note 7 at the start of the week after a number of battery problems were reported, including incidences of the phone “exploding” in the US and South Korea.

Anyone wanting a non-exploding alternative might well turn to the iPhone.
