Google buys more land for European data-centre expansion, says Bloomberg

Google parent Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL) is buying up land in Europe to expand its data centres on the continent, Bloomberg News reports.

The company has purchased 173 acres in the Netherlands and is weighing building on the site, located in Noord-Holland, according to the report.

Google recently bought plots in Denmark, Luxembourg and Sweden, and is considering further investment in its Belgian site.

"We want to ensure that we have options to continue to expand our data centre presence in Europe if our business demands it," a Google spokesman told Bloomberg.

Alphabet shares rose about 1.7% to US$1,154.35 in afternoon trading.
