PyroGenesis Canada Inc (CVE:PYR) (OTCMKTS:PYRNF) is seeing encouraging results from its GEN2 research and development platform, including significantly higher silicon metal production yield.

The Montreal-based company designs, develops and manufactures plasma waste-to-energy systems and torch systems.

In an interim progress report to partner HPQ Silicon Resources Inc, the company identified a new operational parameter that increases the pure silicon metal production yield of the PUREVAP™ Quartz Reduction Reactor.

Additionally, a test using the GEN2 PUREVAP™ showed that the reactor can be modified to a dynamic reactant mixtures load without affecting other major operational parameters of the reactor, which improves production yield.

The test produced the largest single individual silicon nugget, weighing 6.5 grams.

The tests showed the feasibility of modifying the GEN3 PUREVAP™ pilot plant to integrate these advantages into the new design.

“It has always been important to maintain or improve production yield while scaling up to a commercial system,” said Pierre Carabin, CTO and Chief Strategist of PyroGenesis. “Being able to improve it, with results such as today’s, and thereby further mitigating the risk of the project, is a significant achievement in itself, and validates the decision to proceed with the GEN2 middle step.”

The GEN2 PUREVAP™ quartz reduction reactor is a critical bench test platform ahead of the planned GEN3 pilot plant, reducing both the risk profile and the commercial validation timeline of the project.

PyroGenesis is aiming to create both a low cost and green metallurgical approach to producing solar grade silicon metal.

Shares of PyroGenesis were sitting at C$0.60 on the Venture exchange in Toronto and at US$0.46 on the OTCQB in the US.
