Seeing Machines (LON:SEE) has picked up its biggest order to date in South Africa with a division of mining giant BHP Billiton to install its DSS driver fatigue monitoring system across the country.

DSS uses the cutting edge face and eye tracking technology developed by Seeing Machines to assess driver fatigue and concentration levels, a major concern for the operators of big fleets of mining vehicles.

Booyco Electronics, Seeing Machines's South African distributor, said BHP Energy Coal South Africa Limited (BECSA) decided to install the system following a successful trial at the Klipspruit Colliery.

Purchase orders have come in so far for 5 BECSA sites in South Africa. Booyco has been working with BECSA since May 2010 and has so far installed 44 DSS units at various BECSA sites in South Africa.

BECSA is one of the largest energy coal exporters in the world and owns and operates four collieries (Douglas, Khutala, Klipspruit and Middelburg).

Anton Lourens, managing director of Booyco Electronics commented: "This contract represents our largest deal to date for the DSS and we are extremely pleased that BECSA have seen the benefits in deploying the technology more broadly across their operations."

Ken Kroeger, Seeing Machines chief executive, added: "We are very pleased that Booyco have had this success with BECSA following all the work they have put into developing the market in South Africa.

"This continues to demonstrate the need for fatigue management technology and services and further supports the industries' acceptance of DSS as the most reliable choice for their demanding environment."

Seeing Machines' DSS suite monitors driver eye movements to spot signs of fatigue and distraction,

It has been specifically designed for deployment into fleets and environments where fatigue and operator distraction pose substantial risk to personnel and equipment and need to be monitored and managed.
