West China Cement has announced two major contract wins for the Shitian Expressway and Baotou to Xi’an railway line.

WCC won the majority of contracts up for tender for the RMB32bn Shitian Expressway project, with 43 contracts in Ankang and 11 in Hanzhong, resulting in an overall number of 54 contracts out of a total of 64.

The Shitian Expressway will link North West China with central China, providing a high speed route to Tianshui in mountainous Gansu Province. The total mileage is 750 km, of which 480 km is in Shaanxi Province.

Construction of the Expressway commenced in late 2008 and is expected to open to traffic in 2011. The estimated cement consumption for the sections that fell within WCC’s sales radius is three million tons, with one million tons per section needed specifically for Ankang West Section, Ankang East Section and Hanzong Section respectively.

The Baotou to Xi’an railway will run through the Weinan region of Shaanxi province, where WCC’s Pucheng plant is located. The estimated cement consumption for this section is approximately 600,000 tons. The line will be 935 km long and will connect Baotou in Inner-Mongolia and Xi’an in Shaanxi Province. The sections that were opened for bidding stretch from the Yulin region in Northern Shaanxi to the Weinan region.
