Google to acquire Nik Software

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) said Monday it will acquire Nik Software, the maker of Colour Efex Pro and Snapseed for an unknown sum.

Snapseed, which is seen to compete against Instagram, was launched on the Apple iPad in June 2011, followed by the iPhone in August.

Nik Software said Snapseed has over nine million users, though Instagram claims it has over 100 million.

In a Google plus post, senior vice president, Vic Gundotra, said: "We want to help our users create photos they absolutely love, and in our experience Nik does this better than anyone."

Earlier this year, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) purchased Instagram, a photo sharing site that also has filters to distort images, for $1 billion.

"We’ve always aspired to share our passion for photography with everyone, and with Google’s support we hope to be able to help many millions more people create awesome pictures," Nik Software said on its website.
