The series winner will receive a US$500,000 prize

Gfinity PLC’s (LON:GFIN) esports arena in London has played host to the first foray into the burgeoning sector by supercar manufacturer Ferrari.

The Italian carmaker’s Ferrari Driving Academy competed against nine other official Formula 1 esports racing teams, including Red Bull Racing, McLaren and Mercedes-AMG Petronas, to take the top spot in the first match of the 2019 F1 New Balance Esports Pro Series.

The event involves each team racing each other on the official F1 video game, developed by AIM 100 game maker Codemasters Group Holdings PLC (LON:CDM), and carries a US$500,000 cash prize for the series winner.

The first event of the series was streamed across Facebook, YouTube and Twitch as well as a live TV broadcast through multiple partners including Sky.

Ferrari will be defending its place at the top in the second event, which is scheduled to take place at Gfinity’s arena on 2 October.

Qualifying rounds for the 2020 series have also been announced, with any gamer owning a copy of the F1 video game being able to take part and potentially reach the big leagues.

“The drivers and teams yet again delivered world class competition and edge of the seat excitement for millions of fans across the globe”, said Graham Wallace, Gfinity’s chief operating officer.

“With every race the bar is being raised, with the drivers pushing each other to new levels. Bring on the next set of races. The Gfinity Arena is going to be rocking yet again”, he added.
