WeedMD Inc (CVE:WMD) (OTCMKTS:WDDMF) subsidiary Starseed Medicinal Inc has become the preferred supplier of cannabis to the Insulators Local 95 Health & Welfare Trust Fund, a major union.
The Toronto-based cannabis company acquired Starseed in December, giving it a built-in partnership with Canada’s largest construction union, the Laborers’ International Union of North America, which boasts over 100,000 members.
Starseed provides medical cannabis as a fully covered drug benefit for union members and their respective dependents.

Wednesday’s agreement follows similar lines, allowing those covered by the plan to access medical cannabis with no co-pay or out-of-pocket costs.
“We are proud to introduce Starseed’s progressive, full-service medical cannabis platform to our members and their employers who are looking to expand their health and wellness therapies with the safe access to medical cannabis,” said Jeffrey C Baldwin, President - Benefit Plan Administrators Limited, the administrator of the Insulators Local 95 Health & Welfare Trust Fund in a statement.
“Together, we are educating and removing the financial barriers as we legitimize cannabis as a medical and wellness therapy for our members.”
WeedMD CEO Angelo Tsebelis told shareholders that Starseed’s unique and proprietary program is rapidly becoming the platform of choice for benefits providers, insurers and their members.
“We have rolled-out a streamlined process for introducing medical cannabis as part of an individual’s health and wellness journey by developing personalized treatment plans with healthcare experts, and by simplifying the reimbursement process,” Tsebelis said in a statement.
“As a result, we are seeing broader acceptance to medical cannabis and we are pleased to welcome the Insulators Local 95 Health & Welfare Trust Fund’s members to Starseed’s full-service medical cannabis program.”
The firm recently signed the 4,000-member strong Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 1059 to Starseed’s program, the fifth local chapter of the union to come on board.
