The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) has chosen Oxygen Capital chairman and Pure Gold Mining Inc (CVE:PGM) (OTCMKTS:LRTNF) director Mark O’Dea as the recipient of its 2021 Viola R. MacMillan Award.

The award, which is named in honour of PDAC’s longest-serving president, is given to an individual or organization demonstrating leadership in management and financing for the exploration and development of mineral resources.

“I’m thrilled and touched to be receiving this award. I look at the list of past recipients and I’m honoured to be in their company. It’s all about the people around us that support us and keep us standing and that’s really what this award reflects for me,” O’Dea told Proactive Investors in an interview.

He added: "I’m blessed to have the privilege of having so many amazing and respected people in my life over the past 20 years. At the absolute top of the list are my wife and three children, who have kept me grounded and supported all this time.”

Mark O’Dea has built and financed several mining companies globally, creating about C$3 billion in shareholder value since winning second place in the Goldcorp Challenge in 2001.

O’Dea, as a young geologist, launched his first company, Fronteer Gold, in 2001. About 10 years later he sold Fronteer and its flagship Long Canyon gold project in Nevada to Newmont Mining for US$2.3 billion.

He then founded Oxygen Capital, an integrated merchant bank and mining house designed to structure, finance, build and manage mining companies.

In addition to being a director at Pure Gold Mining, O’Dea is currently chairman of Liberty Gold, as well as a director of Discovery Metals, and Sun Metals.

Pure Gold Mining is another one of his notable success stories. After he helped secure support from large corporates and mining titans, the PureGold Mine in Red Lake Ontario is scheduled to complete its first gold pour in December 2020, becoming Canada’s newest high-grade gold mine.

“We are incredibly excited by what lies ahead. The past year has been a year of amazing accomplishments. We are literally weeks away from first gold pour and becoming Canada's next gold mine, a mine that will be the 15th highest grade mine in the world. The team has brought (the mine) in on budget and on schedule despite all the challenges the world has seen this year, so I’m incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished,” O’Dea said.
