Three brings back European roaming charges

The mobile network said it is commercially unviable to continue free roaming

Three to bring back roaming charges

Three is the latest UK mobile network to reintroduce roaming charges for Europe following Britain’s exit from the EU.

Customers who take out a new contract or upgrade from 1 October 2021 will have to pay a flat daily fee of £2 when roaming in the EU and £5 outside the EU. The charges come into effect from 23 May 2022, Three said in a statement.

The Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man will be exempt, it added.

EE and Vodafone recently also announced the return of roaming charges.

The EU banned roaming fees across the bloc in June 2017. The Brexit trade agreement did not guarantee free roaming, although it called for both sides to promote reasonable rates.

“We know that Go Roam has always been important to our customers and we had hoped to retain this benefit, but unfortunately there are now too many unknowns, which has made it commercially unviable for us to continue,” Three said.

“This includes variations to the underlying cost of roaming, meaning we now have no visibility over the maximum amount it will cost us to provide a service for our customers to use their phone while abroad.”
