Nextech AR Solutions expands into the multi-billion-dollar CAD market with new technology converting designs into 3D models
Industrial engineers around the world use CAD software to design modern products

Nextech AR Solutions Corp is launching a new technology that sees it branching out from its ecommerce augmented reality (AR) business and into the multi-billion-dollar CAD market.

The firm is debuting a new CAD to POLY solution that creates optimized 3D meshes that are suitable for 3D and AR applications.

Nextech said it had filed a provisional patent to cover the conversion of CAD files into 3D models.

In a statement, the Vancouver-based company said CAD to 3D model conversion capability “implies drastically improved scalability associated with Nextech's 3D models for ecommerce, with the creation of photo-realistic, fully textured 3D models from raw CAD models and reference images.”

CAD, or computer-aided design, includes a range of technology for design and technical documentation, which replaces manual drafting with an automated process.

“Most modern products that have ever been built have been manufactured from reference CAD models,” Nextech CEO Evan Gappelberg told investors.

Industrial engineers around the world use CAD software to design modern products. In order to use these CAD files for commerce purposes, the CAD file must be converted into a 3D model that is a digital replica of the physical product.

“Think of it, that’s billions of products worldwide, and Nextech has invented an easy way to turn them into 3D models,” Gappelberg said. “Instead of using 2D images to create 3D models, we now have the ability to go straight to the source, where the products are actually designed by engineers (CAD files) and render these into perfect 3D models, at scale.”

BIS Research estimates that the global CAD market is expected to reach $11.21 billion by 2023.

According to Nima Sarshar, Nextech’s chief technology officer, the technology converts CAD files into 3D meshes from the ground up. Instead of relying on native CAD conversion, Nextech created a CAD conversion technology from scratch, creating new techniques based on computational geometry, computer vision and physics.

“When given a CAD file, we can now create fully textured, lightweight 3D models at scale, which can be used for real-time AR and 3D viewing,” Sarshar said.

Nextech’s CAD to POLY solution will be offered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) in 2022. The managed solution is now available.
