Chalice Mining makes new discovery at iconic Julimar property

Chalice Mining Ltd - Chalice Mining makes new discovery at iconic Julimar property
Chalice’s famed Julimar asset lies 70 kilometres northeast of Perth in Western Australia.

Chalice Mining Ltd (ASX:CHN, OTCQB:CGMLF) has made a new shallow, high-grade platinum group element (PGE)-nickel-copper-cobalt sulphide discovery at its 100%-owned Julimar project.

The explorer has traced a new zone of mineralisation directly south of the 6.5-kilometre Hartog airborne electromagnetic (EM) anomaly, beyond the famed Gonneville Intrusion.

This new zone has already been visually identified in holes drilled down-dip and along strike to the south, with firm assay results pending.

As it waits on approval for an initial drilling program on Julimar’s Hartog-Baudin targets, step-out and infill drilling continues at the Gonneville deposit.

“Tantalising new zone”

Speaking to the discovery, Chalice managing director and chief executive officer Alex Dorsch said: “Extensional drilling in an area previously considered to consist only of metasediments has intersected a tantalising new shallow zone of sulphide mineralisation, which is interpreted to be the potential southern extent of a new Hartog zone.

“The moderate nickel, copper and cobalt grades observed are considered particularly encouraging.

“We believe that the new ultramafic unit intersected is very unlikely to be Gonneville, given that it is separated by roughly 70 metres of metasediments and appears to be highly deformed and geochemically different.

“The new discovery has once again upgraded the prospectivity of the more than 6.5-kilometre-long Hartog target immediately north of the new intersections.

“After lengthy consultation with the WA State Government, we believe our low-impact approach to initial drilling in the State Forest is close to being approved.

“We have received positive feedback on our approach to minimising disturbance and we are eagerly awaiting final approvals for drilling to commence at this exciting new frontier.”

A new discovery

Chalice is honing in on a high-grade sulphide mineralisation envelope, which sits within a newly identified ultramafic intrusive unit to Gonneville’s west.

Some of the highlights include:

  • 3 metres at 2.0 g/t palladium, 0.3 g/t platinum, 0.6% nickel, 0.5% copper, 0.05% cobalt (roughly 1.7% nickel equivalent) from 68 metres; and
  • 2 metres at 1.8 g/t palladium, 0.2g/t platinum, 0.6% nickel, 0.5% copper, 0.06% cobalt (around 1.9% nickel equivalent) from 139.2 metres.

Interestingly, the new zone has no EM response but is located immediately south of the approximately 6.5-kilometre Hartog airborne EM anomaly.

This further upgrades the prospectivity of that target and again highlights the potential for further ‘blind’ discoveries.

In addition, ongoing step-out drilling outside the Gonneville resource has extended multiple high-grade zones - grading more than 0.6% nickel equivalent - including:

  • 23.3 metres at 2.8 g/t palladium, 0.7 g/t platinum, 1.0 g/t gold, 0.2% nickel, 1.5% copper, 0.02% cobalt (roughly 2.7% nickel equivalent) from 582 metres;
  • 7.1 metres at 2.3 g/t palladium, 0.9 g/t platinum, 0.3% nickel, 0.9% copper, 0.02% cobalt (around 2.0% nickel equivalent) from 513 metres;
  • 4.4 metres at 4.5 g/t palladium, 2.2 g/t platinum, 0.6% nickel, 0.2% copper, 0.03% cobalt (roughly 3.0% nickel equivalent) from 523 metres;
  • 8.2 metres 2.2 g/t palladium, 1.1 g/t platinum, 1.1 g/t gold, 0.1% nickel, 0.1% copper, 0.01% cobalt (around 1.6% nickel euqivalent) from 455 metres; and
  • 5 metres at 3.3 g/t palladium, 0.8 g/t platinum, 0.2 g/t gold, 0.3% nickel, 0.7% copper, 0.02% cobalt (roughly  2.2% nickel equivalent) from 157 metres.

Next steps

Step-out drilling continues on Julimar’s main farmland, focused on extending the recently established high-grade resource.

Chalice is also conducting 40-metre spaced infill drilling within the shallow, inferred portion of the Gonneville resources.

Here, the company reports exploration continues to deliver results in line with the asset’s resource model.

Chalice has also filed its conservation management plan with the WA State Government.

If approved, the plan paves the way for an initial drilling campaign over Julimar’s Hartog-Baudin exploration targets.

Approval from the government body is expected imminently, meaning Chalice could kick off a new drilling program in the near future.

In the meantime, a scoping study for an initial mine development at Gonneville is progressing on schedule.
