BT Group, Centrica and Barclays just three in a maelstrom of updates

Thursday morning will see the runes picked over from the Fed's interest rate meeting with a rise of 0.75% what economists are expecting.

UK interest though will be firmly company-centric

British gas owner Centrica has been widely tipped to reinstate its dividend after three years.

That is despite a prediction today that the average household gas bill will reach almost £4,000 next year, with £500 for January alone.

Energy consultants at BFY, which made the prediction, estimates that more than half of the country will be pushed into fuel poverty with more than 10% of households’ salaries spent on gas bills.

Has Centrica the nerve to announce a big payout due largely to the soaring cost of gas and court a PR disaster, we'll find out tomorrow.

City folk think so and earlier this month analysts at investment bank Credit Suisse predicted Centrica could lift its dividend to 3.5p per share for the year on the back of its half-yearly results (read more).

BT meanwhile is facing its first-ever national strike and the threat from French group Altice, which has built an 18% stake.

Consensus forecasts in its first quarter are for 0.8% growth in revenues and a 1.2% increase in underlying profits [EBITDA) with strong performances in Consumer/Openreach offset by declines at Enterprise GS (read more

Barclays PLC is expected to report a further charge in its half-year results following the recent disclosure of an SEC breach.

The control failure forced the bank to restate its 2021 numbers by £200mln and make provisions in the first quarter of £320m.

Barclays provided guidance that a 5% fall in the S&P is worth a £300m increase in recission costs and UBS expects with the S&P down 16% in the past three months there will be a further charge of £900m in the litigation (read more).
