Hochschild Mining PLC -

Hochschild Mining PLC (LSE:HOC, OTCQX:HCHDF) said about 30 people from a local community broke into its flagship Inmaculada mining facility in Peru on 31 October and severely damaged certain non-critical installations.

The London-listed precious metal producer said production remains unaffected, although further updates will be provided if the situation changes.

Inmaculada, a gold and silver underground mine in the Ayacucho region in southern Peru, produced 252,000 ounces of gold equivalent in 2021, or about 70% of Hochschild’s total attributable production for that year.

Hochschild said it took immediate action to ensure the safety of the 1,700 employees at the operation and that its rights under Peruvian law were respected. The relevant authorities, including local law enforcement, were notified.

“Despite these developments and the fact that a prior agreement had been in place with the community in question, the company held discussions with community representatives on 1 and 2 November,” Hochschild said in a statement. “As this did not result in an agreement being reached, further discussions will be held next week with representatives from the Peruvian government also scheduled to attend.”

The company added that it expects relevant authorities to intervene to prevent future disruptive and violent acts.
