First Quantum Minerals - Midnight Sun Mining earns ‘Buy’ rating in initial coverage from Haywood Securities

Haywood Securities has initiated coverage of Midnight Sun Mining Corp (TSX-V:MMA, OTCQB:MDNGF) with a ‘Buy’ rating and a target price of C$3, pointing to the company’s exploration assets in Zambia and upcoming project milestones as the primary drivers of its valuation.

The firm said its target price is based on a 0.97x multiple of its net asset value (NAV) estimate.

While noting that Midnight Sun’s projects are at an early exploration stage and do not yet have defined resources or mine plans, Haywood outlined two key assets supporting its investment thesis: the Dumbwa copper project and the Kazhiba oxide copper prospect.

“While MMA’s Zambia projects are early stage, with no resource or mine plans from which to derive value, our target price is supported by major resource potential at Dumbwa and the presence of high-grade oxide copper at Kazhiba,” the analysts wrote.

According to Haywood, Dumbwa represents a large and largely untested copper-in-soil anomaly in Zambia’s Copperbelt. The analysts highlighted a continuous surface anomaly extending roughly 20 kilometres along strike and up to one kilometre in width, supported by geophysical survey data and historical drilling by First Quantum Minerals that intersected copper mineralization in the majority of holes drilled across the trend.

Haywood also pointed to Midnight Sun’s early drilling results at Dumbwa, which it described as encouraging for a large, shallow system.

“We believe Dumbwa represents a high-potential copper development opportunity,” the analysts wrote, adding that, if drilling confirms a large underlying sulphide system, “the project could become a Tier-One copper deposit.”

At the Kazhiba project, Haywood highlighted the potential for near-term development due to the presence of shallow, high-grade oxide copper mineralization located within trucking distance of First Quantum’s Kansanshi mine and mill.

The firm referenced recent drill results and said the company expects to outline an initial resource following completion of drilling and re-drilling of historical void holes.

“With the completion of the drill program, MMA expects to generate a resource of 2–3 Mt of malachite ore grading 2–3% Cu, or more than 100 million pounds of contained copper,” the analysts wrote, noting that such material could be suitable for processing at the nearby Kansanshi facility.

The analysts also identified upcoming resource estimates as potential catalysts for the stock. Drilling at Kazhiba is expected to lead to a maiden resource estimate in the first quarter of 2026, while the current drill program at Dumbwa is anticipated to conclude by the end of the second quarter of 2026, followed by a resource estimate later that year.

Further, the firm highlighted Midnight Sun’s management team, citing the experience of CEO Al Fabbro, COO Kevin Bonel, and vice president of exploration Adrian Karolko, particularly their backgrounds in African mining and copper exploration.

On valuation, Haywood noted that Midnight Sun’s shares have recorded significant gains over the past year, despite the early-stage nature of its assets. The analysts acknowledged that the current market capitalization reflects elevated expectations for Dumbwa and Kazhiba and that the stock could be sensitive to broader market conditions or exploration results.

“It’s early in the exploration process, and we recognize the current valuation already builds in expectations from the work programs,” the analysts wrote. “However, we believe the Dumbwa project has elements of a major copper system, and in the near term, the Kazhiba prospect could develop into a near-surface, high-grade economic oxide resource that could provide near-term cash flow.”

Haywood added that Midnight Sun’s cash position, including proceeds from an equity financing completed in October, provides the company with sufficient funding to advance its exploration programs as planned. “With C$38 million in cash following an equity raise of C$30.5 million in October, MMA is well positioned to carry out its programs,” the analysts wrote.
