Abbott Laboratories -

Genflow Biosciences Ltd (LSE:GENF, OTCQB:GENFF, FRA:WQ5) has appointed a new chairman as the London-listed biotechnology company steps up efforts to push its gene therapy research towards the clinic and, eventually, the market.

The company said Gad Berdugo has joined the board with immediate effect and will become independent non-executive chairman, while Tamara Joseph will remain a director to provide continuity.

Genflow, which is developing treatments aimed at diseases associated with ageing, said the appointment was intended to strengthen its strategic and commercial capabilities as its research programmes mature.

Gene therapy typically involves delivering genetic material into a patient’s cells to correct or modify the underlying causes of disease, a field that has attracted growing interest (and investment) in recent years.

Berdugo brings more than 30 years of experience across biotechnology, finance and corporate development. He is currently managing partner at Explorium Capital LLC, a US-based advisory firm focused on life sciences.

Previous roles include chief business officer at Editas Medicine, as well as senior positions at Abbott Laboratories and Baxter. He has also worked in asset management at Lazard.

Genflow said Berdugo has particular expertise in RNA-based therapies and lipid nanoparticle delivery systems — the tiny fat-like particles used to transport genetic material into cells, an area that could prove important as the company refines how its treatments are delivered.

Dr Eric Leire, chief executive of Genflow, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mr Berdugo as independent non-executive chairman. His expertise in strategy, partnerships and financing, as well as his deep experience with RNA-LNP technologies, will be instrumental as we accelerate our programmes and expand our global reach.”

Berdugo said the timing was right as the company moved into what he described as “the next new phase of development”, with key data expected in 2026 and a tighter focus on its most promising projects. He added that he did not hold any shares in the company.

The appointment underlines a broader trend among early-stage life sciences groups, which are increasingly seeking board-level experience in US capital markets and drug development as they look to turn scientific progress into commercial success.
