About the company
Endeavour Mining PLC is one of the world’s top gold miners and one of the largest gold producers in West Africa, with operating assets across Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso and a strong portfolio of advanced development projects and exploration assets in the highly prospective Birimian Greenstone Belt across West Africa.
A member of the World Gold Council, the company is committed to the principles of responsible mining and delivering sustainable value to its employees, stakeholders and the communities where it operates.
How it is doing
Endeavour Mining PLC (LSE:EDV, TSX:EDV, OTCQX:EDVMF, FRA:6E2) comes out on top as analysts at Jefferies ran the ruler over a number of London-listed gold producers.
Jefferies opened its coverage of Endeavour with a 'Buy' rating and pitched a price target of 5.700p that sees some 62% upside to the miner's share price in London.
The bank's review comes after a six-week sell-off left gold producers trading at historically low valuations.
Jefferies forecasts around $5 billion of free cash flow over the next three years.
Endeavour Mining PLC (LSE:EDV, TSX:EDV, OTCQX:EDVMF, FRA:6E2) generated record first-half free cash flow of US$761 million as surging gold prices outweighed lower production and sharply higher costs.
Adjusted EBITDA rose 38% year on year to US$1.61 billion, while adjusted net earnings increased 69% to US$672 million. The realised gold price averaged US$4,579 an ounce, up 55%.
Mining stocks climbed on Tuesday as investors returned to metals after sharp gains in gold, silver and copper prices driven by hopes of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Endeavour Mining PLC (LSE:EDV) led the FTSE 100 risers, up 3.5%, while Rio Tinto Ltd (LSE:RIO) gained 2.3%, Glencore PLC (LSE:GLEN) rose 2.2%, Antofagasta PLC (LSE:ANTO) 1.9%, Anglo American PLC (LSE:AAL) 1.4% and Fresnillo PLC (LSE:FRES) 0.8%.
Insight: Gold shines on uncertainty, but miners must still earn investor trust
With gold prices trading near record highs at $3,121 an ounce on Monday, investors are once again paying attention to the yellow metal – and the miners that produce it.
But while the headlines scream “all-time highs”, two leading investment banks are urging a more measured view.
What the brokers say
RBC Capital Markets has downgraded Endeavour Mining PLC (LSE:EDV, TSX:EDV, OTCQX:EDVMF, FRA:6E2) to 'sector perform' from 'outperform ', arguing that the West African gold producer's strong run has left most near-term catalysts already reflected in the share price.
The Canadian bank cut its target price on the FTSE 100 miner to 4,600p, from 5,100p, against a closing price of 3,888p.
Analyst Marina Calero said the stock has outperformed the GDX, a widely followed index of gold mining shares, by 20% over the past year.
What management says
Endeavour Mining PLC (LSE:EDV, TSX:EDV, OTCQX:EDVMF) Executive Vice President of Exploration Jono Lawrence visits the Proactive London studio to speak with Thomas Warner about the top-10 global gold producer's exploration efforts.
Endeavour operates four mines across Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. The Tanda-Iguela property in Côte d’Ivoire continues to be Endeavour’s largest exploration focus, with over 226km of drilling completed on the property since late 2021, 168km of which has been completed during YTD 2023.
Lawrence gives more detail about progress as Tanda-Iguela, where a 303% increase in indicated ounces led to a significant 4.5 million ounce yield. This achievement is part of Endeavour's strategy to establish tier-one assets and expand its exploration portfolio. He says that a key factor in Endeavour's rapid progress is its ability to mobilize resources quickly, thanks to its extensive network in West Africa.
