Google CEO likens AI to climate change, urges U.S.-China collaboration on regulations

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has likened artificial intelligence (AI) to climate change because he believes it too will proliferate worldwide and that there is a shared responsibility to create regulations.
Pichai told the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in San Fransisco on Thursday that, should AI go wrong in one country, it could impact other nations.
“In some ways, it’s like climate change and the planet,” Pichai said.
“We all share a planet. I think that’s true for AI. [That’s why] you have to start building the frameworks globally.”
He said he believes China will be at the forefront of AI and stressed the importance of the United States collaborating with China on both AI regulations and innovation.
“No way you make progress over the long term without China and the U.S. deeply talking to each other on something like AI,” the CEO of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)-owned Google said. “It has got to be an integral part of the process.”
