Meta, IBM form 'AI Alliance' to advocate for open source development in artificial intelligence

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) have teamed up to form what the companies are calling the “AI Alliance,” a group advocating for a more transparent approach to artificial intelligence software development.
The alliance, which also includes Dell, Sony, AMD, Intel and a number of universities and startups, believes, “the future of AI is going to be built fundamentally on top of the open scientific exchange of ideas and on open innovation, including open source and open technologies,” IBM senior vice president Dario Gil told the Associated Press on Tuesday.
This approach puts the alliance at odds with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, which have developed AI software in-house.
In fact, IBM’s global government affairs head Chris Padilla criticized those companies for opposing open source development in order to increase their market share.
“It’s sort of a classic regulatory capture approach of trying to raise fears about open-source innovation,” Padilla told the Associated Press. “I mean, this has been the Microsoft model for decades, right? They always opposed open-source programs that could compete with Windows or Office. They’re taking a similar approach here.”
The AI Alliance is expected to lobby for what it calls an “open-science” approach.
