Copper bull market "fast tracked" with higher prices to come soon, Jefferies says

Analysts at Jefferies have adjusted their outlook on the copper market, foreseeing an accelerated onset of a bullish trend.
Initially apprehensive about the impact of a weakening US economy, their concerns have been assuaged by what they perceive as the resilience of the US economic landscape. This newfound optimism, they argue, is poised to drive an anticipated upturn in the copper market.
Despite ongoing apprehensions surrounding Chinese demand, Jefferies finds solace in the recent surge in copper prices, deeming it both encouraging and warranted.
Their recommendation? Invest in a selection of copper mining companies, including Freeport-McMoRan Inc (NYSE:FCX, ETR:FPMB), Lundin Mining Corporation (TSX:LUN), Teck Resources Ltd (TSX:TECK.B), Glencore PLC (LSE:GLEN), and First Quantum Minerals (TSX:FM).
“Despite a weak outlook for China, we still expect copper market deficits as a result of strength in non-Chinese demand and a lack of supply growth,” analysts wrote.
Delving into specific market dynamics, Jefferies underscores the significance of copper in data centers and the energy transition, citing a rising demand for its electrical conductivity. Furthermore, they shine a light on India's burgeoning appetite for copper, despite its relatively smaller share of global demand.
According to Wood Mackenzie, Indian copper demand increased by 18% year over year in 2023 and has grown at a CAGR of 10% for the past five years, analysts noted.
"While India only accounts for about 5% of global copper demand, it is becoming a big enough end market to move the needle as a result of its strong growth rates and bigger base," Jefferies wrote. "We believe the India story in metals and mining is still underappreciated."
With these factors in mind, Jefferies asserts that the next bull market in copper has been fast-tracked due to a more favorable demand outlook. While they remain cautiously conservative about near-term copper price forecasts, they express confidence in the potential for higher prices.
“Based on our analysis, global copper mine supply will decline this year as a result of depletion from existing mines and a lack of investment in new projects. The lead time to bring new copper capacity online is (more than) five years,” analysts wrote.
“In a world of near-term market deficits, it will be demand that must adjust to balance the market. And this will require significantly higher prices.”
Evaluating copper projects: key considerations
When evaluating the quality of copper ore, several crucial factors come into play:
- Percentage of Copper Content: The grade of copper ore is typically quantified as a percentage of copper content per ton of ore. Higher percentages indicate higher-grade ore, suggesting greater economic viability.
- Comparison with Industry Standards: Benchmarking the grade of copper ore against industry standards and averages offers valuable insights. Understanding typical grades for a given deposit or region aids in assessing its relative quality.
- Economic Viability: Assessing the economic feasibility of extracting copper from the ore is paramount. Higher-grade ores generally entail lower processing and extraction costs, enhancing profitability.
- Mineralogical Characteristics: Familiarity with the mineralogical composition of the ore deposit aids in gauging its economic value. Other valuable minerals coexisting with copper may influence its overall worth.
- Processing Requirements: Evaluating the processing demands necessary for copper extraction provides clarity on feasibility. Lower-grade ores often necessitate more intricate and expensive processing techniques.
- Environmental Considerations: Factoring in the environmental implications of mining and processing lower-grade copper ores is essential. More intensive extraction methods may pose heightened environmental risks, necessitating careful consideration of regulatory and community concerns.
By comprehensively analyzing these factors, investors can effectively gauge the quality and potential profitability of copper ore deposits.
