Zambia’s copper resource potential has attracted the attention of another exploration and development company: Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN, OTCQX:IVPAF).

The Canadian firm hopes to replicate the “same model of success” that led to the discovery and development of its Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in neighboring Zambia.

“Over the past 20 years, our geologists have discovered over 50 million tonnes of copper under the western edge of the Central African Copperbelt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” Ivanhoe Mines founder and executive co-chairman Robert Friedland commented.

“We are now entering Zambia, as well as Angola, where we have high conviction that new discoveries are waiting to be uncovered.”

Ivanhoe Mines has signed a memorandum of understanding with Zambia’s Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development to support its entry into the country.

In parallel with the MOU, Ivanhoe Mines has applied for an exploration licences package in Zambia, with a decision expected by the year-end.

Under the agreement, in addition to identifying prospective land packages and providing support regarding license applications, the Zambian Government will provide Ivanhoe Mines access to existing and new geological data it has collected.

This includes data from a new 750,000 square kilometer airborne geophysical survey, announced by the Zambian Government in August.

This survey forms part of Zambia’s efforts to achieve its goal of three million tons of copper production by 2031.

This would put the country, which is currently the second-largest copper producer in Africa, on track to be the second-largest global copper producer.

Zambia attracts global miners

In entering Zambia, Ivanhoe Mines joins a number of global mining giants already operating world-class copper mines in Zambia. Leading producers include First Quantum Minerals (TSX:FM), Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX, NYSE:GOLD), and Glencore PLC (LSE:GLEN).

Cementing Zambia's position as a leading copper producer is the discovery of what may be the largest deposits ever recorded in the nation earlier this year.

KoBold Metals, a California-based firm that uses artificial intelligence to search for mineral deposits, believes its Mingomba copper deposit in Zambia will be one of the world’s largest, high-grade copper mines.

The Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos-backed firm has also partnered with Midnight Sun Mining Corp (TSX-V:MMA, OTCQB:MDNGF) to advance the prospective Dumbwa target within Midnight Sun’s Solwezi project.

This is one of four key prospects within the 506-kilometer project, with Midnight Sun recently raising $10 million to advance its exploration efforts.

While copper continues to be Zambia’s primary focus, the country’s abundant uranium reserves are also gaining attention. As a byproduct of copper mining, uranium has become a significant factor in the nation’s resource development.

GoviEx Uranium Inc (TSX-V:GXU, OTCQX:GVXXF), which is developing the Muntanga project toward a feasibility study expected later this year, announced earlier this month it is increasing its footprint in the country.

It has secured an option to acquire a 51% interest in the Lundazi exploration licences, which spans 817.9 square kilometers and features uranium-rich formations.

As Ivanhoe Mines ventures into Zambia’s copper-rich terrain, it enters a landscape where both copper and uranium are shaping the future of resource extraction, positioning the country as a dual powerhouse in mining.
