Tech Bytes: Intel appoints Lip-Bu Tan as CEO to lead turnaround strategy

Intel Corporation has appointed semiconductor veteran Lip-Bu Tan as its new chief executive officer – a pivotal leadership change as the company seeks to revive its fortunes after years of lacklustre performance in a highly competitive market.
Tan, a long-standing figure in the technology and semiconductor sectors, assumed the role on March 18, 2025.
Reversal of fortunes
Speculation about potential takeovers has surrounded the company in recent months and there was uncertainty about its future – Tan’s appointment is widely seen as the best hope for a reversal of fortunes for the flagging tech giant.
The announcement triggered a surge in investor confidence, with Intel shares jumping nearly 13% in after-hours trading.
Despite the rally, the company's stock has declined more than 54% over the past year, reflecting mounting concerns over its strategic direction and market competitiveness.
The appointment follows the resignation of former CEO Pat Gelsinger in December.
Tan brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as CEO of Cadence Design Systems for more than a decade, where he led a major transformation of the company.
He is also the founding managing partner of Walden Catalyst Ventures, a firm with a portfolio spanning semiconductors, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other advanced technologies.
Intel’s interim executive chair Frank Yeary described Tan as a leader with exceptional credentials and industry insight, pointing to his deep connections within the technology ecosystem and a strong record of delivering shareholder value.
Yeary will return to his role as the board’s independent chair upon Tan’s appointment.
Critical juncture
The leadership transition comes at a critical juncture for Intel.
Once a dominant force in the chip industry, the company has faced a series of strategic missteps, missing out on key market shifts such as the rise of mobile computing and artificial intelligence.
This has allowed competitors like Nvidia and Qualcomm to take the lead in emerging technologies, while Intel has struggled to maintain its position.
Tan’s challenge will be to steer the company through a period of rapid technological evolution and re-establish its relevance in high-growth segments.
