China to examine Meta’s Manus acquisition

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META, XETRA:FB2A, SIX:FB) is again being reminded that global AI deals don’t happen in isolation. Chinese officials are reviewing Meta’s proposed $2 billion acquisition of AI startup Manus, the Financial Times reports.
The review, led by China’s commerce ministry, is at an early stage and is examining whether Manus’s technology and the relocation of staff to Singapore should have required an export licence under Chinese regulations.
Gaining superintelligence
Meta snapped up AI chatbot company Manus, as it sharpens its push toward AI “superintelligence”.
Manus builds “general AI agents” designed to carry out actions on a user’s behalf, and has developed tools for generating bots that can improve interactive workflows and task sequencing. Meta appears to see potential applications for those capabilities, whether to enhance Meta AI directly or to support broader product and platform development.
In a statement, Meta said Manus has built “one of the leading autonomous general-purpose agents” that can independently execute complex tasks such as market research, coding and data analysis. Meta added it plans to keep operating and selling the Manus service while integrating the technology into its own products.
For now, that points to a dual-brand approach, with Manus continuing as a standalone offering alongside Meta’s own AI suite—though over time the service could be folded more tightly into Meta’s broader AI product stack.
