Traders abandon bets on a GPT-5.6 launch this week

Prediction market traders have abandoned bets that OpenAI will release its next artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6, before the end of this week.
On Polymarket, the betting platform, the chance of a launch between 22 and 28 June has collapsed to 18%, having stood at around 83% earlier in the month.
The opposite position, that the model will not ship by 28 June, now trades at 83%.
More than $560,000 has been wagered on the timing, making it one of the platform's busier technology markets.
The swing marks a sharp change in sentiment after weeks in which a late-June arrival looked all but certain.
GPT-5.6 would succeed GPT-5.5, which launched on 23 April, and would extend an unusually rapid release schedule at the San Francisco company.
OpenAI has moved to a roughly six-week cadence for its flagship models, far quicker than the once or twice yearly updates of earlier years.
That pace is widely seen as a response to competition from Anthropic, maker of the rival Claude models, and from a wave of low-cost Chinese systems.
OpenAI has made no official announcement, and no system card, release notes or programming interface listing for GPT-5.6 has appeared.
The company's chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, told staff this month that the model represented a meaningful improvement over GPT-5.5, according to reports.
Developers have reported brief sightings of a release candidate, codenamed Kindle-Alpha, on a public testing platform before it was withdrawn.
Such appearances have previously signalled that a model is in final preparation, though they offer no firm guide to a public launch date.
Leaked specifications suggest GPT-5.6 will handle far longer documents, with a memory span of about 1.5 million tokens, roughly 43% more than its predecessor.
The model is also expected to improve at running long, multi-step tasks with little human oversight, the area where rivals have made ground.
Traders are calmer about the months ahead, pricing a release by 31 July at 94% and giving a separate GPT-6 launch this year a 67% chance.
For now, though, the betting suggests anyone expecting GPT-5.6 in the coming days is likely to be disappointed.
